Invisalign vs. Braces: Which Is Right for You?

Invisalign vs. Braces: Which Is Right for You?

This question comes from patients ranging from 14 to 58. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on the case — and that neither option is universally better. Here’s how I walk through the decision with patients.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear aligners, each one slightly different from the last, that you wear 20–22 hours per day and swap out every one to two weeks. Each set moves your teeth incrementally toward their final position. Because they’re removable, you eat normally, brush normally, and in most social situations no one knows you’re in treatment.

The technology has improved significantly over the past decade. Movements that required braces ten years ago — certain rotations, moderate bite corrections — are now routinely handled with Invisalign, especially with the addition of small composite “attachments” bonded to specific teeth that give the aligners additional leverage.

How Traditional Braces Work

Brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected by archwires that apply continuous, precise force. I adjust the wires at regular appointments to guide teeth progressively into position. Because braces are fixed — you can’t remove them — they’re not dependent on patient compliance. For complex movements, this gives me more predictable control over exactly how each tooth tracks.

Which Is Right for Your Case?

Invisalign handles mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and many bite corrections very well. Braces still have a clear advantage for:

  • Significant overcrowding that may require extractions
  • Large vertical bite corrections — deep bite or open bite
  • Teeth requiring rotation beyond about 20 degrees
  • Patients who are unlikely to wear aligners consistently

That last point matters more than people want to admit. Invisalign only works if it’s in your mouth. I’ve had patients extend treatment by months because they removed aligners for meals and didn’t put them back for hours. If you know yourself — if you’d rationalize skipping wear time regularly — braces may actually produce a better outcome, simply because compliance isn’t a variable.

The Discretion Factor

For adults, the appeal of Invisalign is obvious. The aligners are nearly invisible in photos and professional settings, and there are no food restrictions. I’ve had patients in their 40s and 50s who would never have considered traditional braces finally commit to orthodontic treatment because of Invisalign. That matters. If discretion is what’s been holding you back, it’s absolutely worth a consultation.

A Note on Sequencing

If you’re also considering cosmetic improvements — whitening, bonding, or veneers — orthodontic work should come first. There’s no point placing veneers on teeth that are going to move. When patients come in with multiple goals, I’ll always lay out the right sequence upfront so nothing gets done out of order.

Cost

Both options are in a comparable range. What drives cost is case complexity and treatment length, not the technology itself. A straightforward Invisalign case is priced similarly to a straightforward braces case. The only way to get an accurate number is a consultation, where I can assess your specific situation and give you a real estimate for each option.
